Wow!  I love this!  Just reading the section on being a Paidea Child reminded me of all the wonderful reasons why we enrolled Kate, and gave me a warm feeling that she is in excellent hands while we are at work.

Weekly field trips are a rarity for most centers.  Some may only take a few trips per year.  I could always spot them downtown as the children strolled by holding on to a rope.

But not at Paidea.  My son Jackson loves field trip day and looks forward to them every week.  He comes home excited to tell us where he went and what he saw.

As a parent, I am also excited that his world has grown so much bigger then just his classroom.

Paidea Programs

Toddler Preschool Kindergarten School-age

Preschool Program
Age: 3 - 5 years

Our programs are based on the needs of the children.

Everything we do is the result of a conscious decision based on what is best for the child.

Our Program

Purpose

Mixed age group

Children who stay with teachers for a longer period of time form close attachments
Research supports aggressive children are not as aggressive, cautious children can be brought out when in mixed age groups

Team teaching (not aides and assistants)

Provides consistency for children, support for staff

Plan - Do - Review process

Children learn to think about what they want to do, do it, and then evaluate it, which is an important life skill

Consistent daily routine

Provides structure and security to children

Balance:
   Indoor / Outdoor
   Small group / Large group
   Child directed / Teacher directed

Develops the entire child and supports all styles of learning

Weekly field trips

Consistency provides for safety of children
Provides opportunities to explore larger community
Teaches children responsibility to stay with the group and how to act appropriately

Specialists in the afternoon for all children (art, music, phy. ed., etc.) no pull out classes offered on site, no additional expenses for parents

Allows children to explore enrichment classes
Minimizes transitions, which can be difficult for many children

Actively teach emotional intelligence, problem-solving, cooperative skills

These 'life skills' have greater impact when learned at an early age

Integrate cognitive skills into all activities

Concepts have meaning to the children and are not taught out of context

Teach children self-discipline

Paidea's 3 rules:
Stop if unsafe - find a save way to do that
Stop if hurtful - to people, environment, animals
Stop if disrespectful - listen, use kind words

Children learn to monitor their own behavior and make appropriate choices (develop internal locus of control)

Summer camp

Summer becomes 'Camp Paidea' as children in year around care participate in camp and nature activities
